A homeless woman fell asleep drunk in a farm’s sheepfold and woke up to a horrific discovery. The 60-year-old woman, known only as Marina, was found in a shocking state by a horrified passerby in Stavropol Krai, Russia.
Marina woke up to find her legs had been eaten by rats as she slept in the farm’s sheepfold. By the time she reached the hospital with the passerby’s help, gangrene had already set in and what was left of both legs had to be amputated, local media reported.
Marina, 60, said, “I was drunk and the rats ate me.” She is now recovering in a homeless shelter in the city, which local authorities are planning to close due to fire hazards.
Olga Shiryaeva, director of the Helping Hand shelter, said that the woman has no papers and no one to turn to. Olga added that Marina has made friends and is slowly recovering, but her family has been unwilling to talk to her. She said, “She doesn’t own anything and has nowhere to go. Plus she has to be carried everywhere and has to wear nappies that need changing.”
“We contacted her brother but he said he hadn’t spoken to her for years and asked us to stop calling him. He said, “She’s made her choices. Now when I say, ‘Marina, will you have a drink?’ she says, ‘Yes, pour me a drink.’ And she still manages to smoke.” According to the NHS website, gangrene is a serious condition in which a loss of blood supply causes body tissue to die.
Last year, a similar incident took place in Canada. A mother narrowly avoided having her limbs amputated after falling asleep in an awkward position following a night out. Julia Anderson had enjoyed a pub crawl with friends and consumed a lot of vodka in Toronto, before booking a taxi to go home.
