Imagine donating money to a beggar on the street who turns out to be already rich. Baffling, right? Well, there is one beggar who is quite rich and earns a lot of money by just begging. For the last 12 years, a professional Chinese actor named Lu Jingang has been earning money by begging money at a popular and crowded spot. He collects money, food and drinks sometimes from kindhearted people. One look at him and you will think he is nothing but a poor beggar. However, his excellent acting skills are what make him great at his job and help him earn his livelihood.
Lu is a professional actor who has been begging at the Qingming Shanghe Garden scenic area in China’s Henan Province for the last 12 years. He covers up his face with dirt, puts up a sad face and wears modest clothing with a little wear and tear. He has honed the craft of begging to ensure that tourists take pity on his situation and empty out their pockets for him. However, in reality, he is anything but poor.
Lu earns up to 70,000 yuan (Rs 8 lakh approx) per month, plus more food and beverages as well. As per reports, the highest salary in China is about 29,000 yuan (Rs 3 lakh approx). This makes Lu Jingang one of the highest-earning individuals in China. A few reports claim him to be one of the richest beggars in China, however, he is actually a pro actor who begs for profit.
It may sound quite odd, but Lu chose this career path because of his love for putting up a show and performing. Begging on the streets allows him to do just that without the need for an audition. His family did not support him in the beginning. Lu Jingang’s performance as a beggar earned him much attention on the internet.
