Novak Djokovic to Sania Mirza, 'I Love the People in India, Wish to See More Children Playing Tennis'
Novak Djokovic in an interaction with Sania Mirza revealed his intention to work on developmental programs for children in India as the Serbian legend revealed his love for the country.

Novak Djokovic, the Serbian tennis legend, revealed his intentions to work on programs as part of his charitable foundation in India. The defending Australian Open champion had also spoken to the Indian tennis legend, Sania Mirza as well.

Djokovic had spoken to Star Sports, where Sania Mirza was also present.  The Serbian revealed his intentions of starting up programmes in India. He said,”I wish to be part of some programs designed particularly for the development of kids in their early childhood because that is something, I’m very passionate about.”

Djokovic also mentioned that he wished to see more kids picking up tennis as a sport which would make him happy. He added, “That is also the cornerstone of our foundation. I would like to see more children grabbing a racquet and playing tennis. Being a tennis player, seeing that happen will fill my heart with joy.”

The Serbian legend revealed his love for the country and the people. He mentioned, “I feel I have a special connection with India. I love the people there; they have been very kind to me and are one of the most genuine and gentle people in the world. They love their sports with cricket being the most followed obviously. But tennis, as I understand, is followed great across the country too.”

The last time Djokovic played in India was for the now-defunct International Tennis Premier League in 2014.

Djokovic concluded by saying,“Hopefully, there are many years ahead of me so that I can spend more time in your beautiful country and we can work on the mission of empowering more kids to take up tennis.”

The defending Australian Open champion has come off a dominant win over the 30th-ranked, T Etcheverry from Argentina. Djokovic managed to secure the win in straight sets having 6-3, 6-3, 7-6 with the final set going down to a tie-breaker.

Djokovic will now take on A Mannarino at the Rod Laver Arena in the fourth round on Sunday.
