New Delhi: An unlimited free storage, ability to post pictures directly on the social media, auto-backup and auto-organising feature, Google’s newly announced Photos service sounded like the next big thing in the cloud storage solution for photos and videos when it was announced at this week’s Google I/O conference in San Francisco. However, the latest pull out from Google+ comes with a pretty neat asterisk, if you pay attention that is.
With Google Photos, the company promised auto backup and syncing of ‘unlimited’ photos and videos without a compromise on quality. A BGR report notes that this ‘unlimited’ storage option is not truly unlimited and there are two major limitations to the photo service.
Google Photos maintains the original resolution up to 16 megapixels or 4920 x 3264 pixels for photos which means any photo larger than that will automatically be downsampled by Google. This is especially disappointing for photography enthusiasts who will witness dramatic scaling down of quality of DSLR images when uploaded to Google Photos.
Secondly, the service supports video quality up to 1080p which is again disappointing if you intend to store your2K or 4K videos shot through latest Android phones on the service as the quality will again be compromised.
These limitations are likely to be a cause of concern for the professionals who had high hopes with the hyped photos storage service by the search giant. For casual users, Google Photos is just what they might have liked to have to store, sync, share their memories on Hangouts, Twitter, Facebook, or WhatsApp without ever having to leave the app.
