Tech Layoffs 2024: Google, Amazon, & More Let Go of Hundreds; Startups Downsizing Too
2024 has brought bad news for hundreds of employees across multiple companies, including Google, Amazon, and Humane. Check the complete list here.

Last year, we saw multiple tech giants lay off thousands of employees. Big names like Google, Meta, and Amazon fired a big chunk of their workforce to downsize after the COVID-driven growth slowed down.

In 2024, we are seeing yet another round of tech company layoffs. Just this week, multiple companies let go of a ton of their workers. Here’s a list of companies that have laid off employees since the start of the year:

2024 Layoffs So Far

– Google, the search giant, let go of hundreds of employees across multiple teams, including its Voice Assistant unit, hundreds in its hardware team responsible for Pixel, Nest, and Fitbit. Additionally, it let go of employees in its augmented reality team and in its central engineering team.

– Amazon is cutting hundreds of jobs in its Prime Video and MGM Studios divisions, according to a report by Forbes. The company reportedly reviewed “nearly every aspect” of its business operations before making the decision.

– Humane, the startup behind the new AI Pin, has fired 10 employees, which is 4% of its workforce. CEO Bethany Bongiorono says that the cuts are part of “some changes to best prepare us for continued growth.”

– Twitch, the popular game streaming platform, has also announced plans to lay off about 35% of its staff, which is about 500 roles. CEO Dan Clancy justified this move by saying that the company is “meaningfully larger than it needs to be given the size of our business.”

– Discord, another game streaming platform, is also laying off about 17% of its workforce, which is about 170 employees, The Verge reported. The company is reportedly doing this to “bring more agility” to the company.

– Duolingo, the popular language learning platform, is also laying off its contract workers. The company is reportedly using artificial intelligence to create content, which is why it is no longer needing as many contract workers. However, the company’s full-time employees are not being let go at this time.
