Facebook Messenger is Testing Dark Mode; Rolls Out Feature For Users in Select Countries

The noted app-teardown expert Jane Manchun Wong revealed on Twitter that the Android version of Facebook's popular messaging application is currently testing its upcoming 'dark mode'. On the basis of the screenshot provided by Wong, a new "Dark Mode" setting should appear in the "Me" section of the app. A warning detailing that the new dark mode is still a work in progress will also appear — though it isn't immediately clear if that message appears when toggling the setting, or when loading the section which contains it.

Messenger’s new feature turns the previously-white background black. In addition to this, the black text is switched to white and anything that is light gray in the standard UI is replaced with a darker tone. However, the colorful elements remain completely unchanged.

To "help spread holiday cheer," Facebook integrated five new features into Messenger's camera to make your chat a bit more animated and a bit more festive. The platform now supports the fan-favorite looping-video format, Boomerang (originally seen in Facebook-owned Instagram), as well as a new Selfie mode that blurs the background of a portrait while giving the subject a subtle glow. In addition to making it easier to navigate between camera modes -- Normal, Video, Text, and now Selfie -- Text mode now has more font options and background color possibilities.
