BANGALORE: In yet another heist in the city that was reported right under the nose of police, miscreants made away with jewellery around Rs 55 lakh in Halasuru police limits.
The incident took place in Pooja Jewels on Bazaar Street in the wee hours of Friday. The shop is less than 50 metres away from the police station but still the miscreants managed to stay in the shop for around two hours to commit the theft. The jewellery shop is on the ground floor. The burglars entered the shop by digging a hole in its roof. Police said that on the first floor of the building - just above the jewellery shop - New Navayuga Deluxe restaurant was being run. The eatery was closed two years ago but the owner had not locked its door. Police said the burglars took advantage of this and dug the restaurant's floor with a pick axe. Then they tore the ceiling of the jewellery shop, which was made of plaster of paris. Police said the burglars escaped the shop with the valuables through the hole in the roof.

Deepak, son of shop owner Jai Chand, said they were running the jewellery shop since nine years in the building. He said he opened the shop at around 10.30 am and was shocked to see that there were no jewels in the showcases. He said they had never expected that such a thing would happen as the police station is so close. Deepak informed that they had not even installed CCTV cameras or hired security.

The miscreants' fingerprints have been collected. Also, the police have gone through the video footage recorded by the camera installed at the traffic signal in front of the police station. Reportedly, the footage does not have any visuals of the burglars. The investigations are on.
