Celebrating its 18th anniversary on December 16, the National Award-winning film Thanmathra, directed by Blessy and starring superstar Mohanlal, continues to leave an indelible mark. The movie explores the impact of Alzheimer’s disease on a middle-class man and his family, drawing inspiration from Padmarajan’s short story titled Orma. A blockbuster at the box office, the film ran for over 150 days and received acclaim for its powerful portrayal of the subject matter.
Receiving accolades at various levels, Thanmathra secured five Kerala State Film Awards, including Best Actor, Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Film, and a Special Mention for debutant actor Arjun Lal. The movie also clinched the National Award for Best Feature Film in Malayalam. In celebration of this significant milestone, director Blessy shared a heartfelt tribute video on Facebook, expressing gratitude for the memorable journey and the audience’s enduring love.
Reflecting on the 18 years since the film’s release, Blessy acknowledged the power of cinema and storytelling, highlighting how Thanmathra successfully raised awareness about Alzheimer’s disease in society. The director thanked the audience and everyone involved in the film’s production for their unwavering support. In the video, he delved into the genesis of the film, revealing that the idea for Thanmathra had been brewing even before his directorial debut, Kaazhcha.
Blessy described the film as a poignant exploration of relationships, portraying the aspirations of middle-class families to see their children achieve what they couldn’t. He commended the stellar performances of the cast, including Mohanlal, Nedumudi Venu, Jagath Sree Kumar, Arjun Lal, and Meera Vasudev, highlighting their dedication to their respective roles.
Looking ahead, Blessy is currently immersed in the making of “Aadujeevitham," featuring Prithviraj Sukumaran in the lead role. The film is slated for release in April of the upcoming year.
