US Cong approves N-deal, CPI says nothing to celebrate
Raja says PM and his team were desperate to get the deal passed.

New Delhi: With the US House of Representatives approving the Indo-US nuclear deal, the Communist Party of India (CPI) on Sunday said that there was nothing to celebrate and that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is answerable to the country as America is consistent in keeping its position very clear.

"There is nothing to celebrate. The apprehensions expressed by Left parties have come true," said CPI National Secretary D Raja.

PM Manmohan Singh and his team were "desperate" to somehow get the deal pass through the US Congress, he added.

"The PM will be answerable and accountable. On the other side, the US has been very consistent to keep its position very clear and categorical," he said.

After a lot of drama and suspense, the House passed the Bill on the deal on an unusual extra day of sitting on Saturday with bi-partisan support but a considerable number of Democrats voted against it.

The Berman Bill H R 7081, named after Howard Berman, a Democrat who initially strongly opposed the deal on non-proliferation grounds and has just changed his opinion a couple of days ago, was adopted with 298 voting for and 117 against.

In the meanwhile, CPI(M) Polit Bureau member Sitaram Yechury also opposed the passing of the Indo-US nuclear deal.

“Nothing surprising. This means surrendering to the American diktat. PM Manmohan Singh tells Bush that people in India love him, which is farther than from the truth,” Yechury said.
