Lucknow: 960 candidates are left in the fray for 55 Uttar Pradesh Assembly seats going to polls in the first phase on February 8 after rejection of 57 nominations on Friday.
"A total of 1,017 nominations were filed for the first phase of polling of which 57 were rejected," Chief Electoral Officer Umesh Sinha said in Lucknow.
Prominent among those whose nomination papers were rejected are Indusen of SP and Sadiya Khatun of BSP, who filed their papers for Bikapur seat in Faizabad.
Nominations of Jamuna of BSP for Rudauli seat and Ramesh Chakravarti of BJP for Mahadewa were also rejected. Meanwhile, for the second phase of polls 219 nominations were filed on Friday, taking the total number of nominations to 505, poll officials said.
Prominent candidates included sitting BJP MLA Radha Mohan Das for Gorakhpur Urban, Cabinet minister in the Mayawati government Swami Prasad Maurya for Padrauna and Bachcha Pathak of Congress for Bansdih.
