TN Assembly Speaker D Jayakumar said Karunanidhi's statement was 'regrettable and condemnable'.

Chennai: Maintaining that due procedure was followed in suspension of opposition leader Vijayakanth of DMDK from the House, Tamil Nadu Assembly Speaker D Jayakumar on Wednesday slammed DMK President M Karunanidhi for charging that the action showed ruling AIADMK's "anti-democratic rule."

The action of Vijayakanth, making some gestures at the ruling benches in the course of a heated exchange with Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa in the House last week, was referred to the Privilege Committee comprising members from all parties including DMK, Jayakumar said.

"He was given an opportunity to make an explanation before the Committee though he rejected it. The Privilege Committeemembers accepted that his behaviour did not keep to the ethos of the House," the Speaker said in a statement in Chennai.

Under such circumstances, Karunanidhi's statement was "regrettable and condemnable," he said adding the DMK leader was trying to score political mileage out of the issue by linking it with the government and this was "mischievous."

He recalled that in 2007, during the DMK regime, then Opposition AIADMK MLA AK Bose was suspended for 10 days over two sessions for allegedly creating ruckus.

"Bose was not allowed to explain his position unlike in the case of Vijayakanth and Karunanidhi, who was Chief Minister then, had supported the suspension saying it would help in upholding democracy in the future." Jayakumar said.
