SP is coming to PM's dinner, Mayawati isn't
Prime Minister has been careful in inviting leaders of all political parties.

New Delhi: The Samajwadi Party (SP) may soon be breaking bread with the Congress and the Bahujan Samaj party (BSP) won’t even share bread with the ruling party.

As the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government celebrates its fourth anniversary, the Congress is reaching out to the SP. The Union Law Ministry has recommended to the Election Commission that it drop a disqualification notice against SP General Secretary Amar Singh.

The Commission had served a notice to Singh on a petition by an advocate who claimed that the SP leader should be disqualified from the Rajya Sabha as he simultaneously held the post of chairperson of UP Development Council - an alleged violation of the Office of Profit rules.

No action is likely on that notice because of the Law Ministry’s recommendation.

The SP, perhaps in gratitude, has confirmed that it would attend a dinner Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is hosting on Thursday to mark four years of his government.

SP chief Mulayam Singh Yadav or Singh could be seen breaking bread with Congress leader Sonia Gandhi at the dinner - a marked difference from last year when the two parties fought against each other bitterly in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections.

The BSP is staying away from Prime Minister's dinner though.

The Prime Minister has been careful in inviting leaders of all political parties but sources tell CNN-IBN that BSP chief Mayawati will not attend the dinner.

Senior BSP leaders are unlikely to attend the dinner too, said sources.

CNN-IBN’s National Affairs Editor Diptosh Majumdar says the Congress is stepping closer to the SP because it feels Mayawati is becoming a threat outside UP too.

The UPA Government has rejected Mayawati’s demands that the Central Bureau of Investigation probe several cases, including some against SP leaders, in UP.

The Congress thinks the BSP is growing outside UP but not the SP. The SP is confined to UP and the Congress sees no trouble in allying with it - at least outside UP, say Majumdar.
