Allahabad: Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi's constituency Amethi in Uttar Pradesh is no longer a district. The Allahabad High Court on Monday struck down the district status of Amethi.

Amethi, which was named as Chhatrapati Sahuji Maharaj Nagar by the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) government and later renamed as Amethi by the Samajwadi Party government, was carved out of Sultanpur and Rae Bareli districts of northern Uttar Pradesh.

Suggesting growing differences between the Congress and the SP, the Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Limited (UPPCL), had last week, withdrawn the 'VIP' status to Rae Bareli (Sonia Gandhi's constituency) and Amethi with regard to 24X7 power supply to the districts.

The 24X7 power supply was, however, restored to the districts a day later. There were reports that the "political move" was criticised by the Congress.
