New Delhi: The chief cleric of Deoband Ghulam Mohd Vastanvi, said on Thursday that he has not resigned and neither did he offer to resign because of his pro Narendra Modi comments.
Deoband's chief cleric played down the controversy over his resignation. Ghulam Mohd Vastanvi said he has not resigned nor did he offer to resign. He also said his resignation has nothing to do with his praise for Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi .
Vastanvi said, "I am not resigning as it has nothing to to do with my comments on Modi. I still continue to be the vice-chancellor of Darul Uloomtill February 23."
"A meeting of the Majlis-e- Soora (governing council) will be held on February 23, in which scholars from all over the country will come. I will present my case and they will decide on whether I should continue or not," Vastanvi told reporters in Vadodara.
The Head of Darul Uloom offered to resign on Tuesday after reports of infighting and student violence on Campus.
The newly elected chief has been under fire for his statement where he allegedly praised developmental work in Narendra Modi's Gujrat.
The ultra-conservative lobby in India's oldest seminary proved too much to handle for the MBA Maulana who has decided to step down as Darul Ulooom Chief.
Ghulam Vastanvi has been facing flak for alleged pro-Narendra Modi remarks praising his developmental work in the state. Students of Darul Uloom also staged protests against him.
Vastanvi, who hails from Surat, said in his defence that he did not give a clean chit to Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi for the 2002 post-Godhra riots.
"My statements (on Modi) were either misunderstood or badly represented in Urdu media. My first interview published in the newspaper clearly stated that I have not given a clean chit to Modi," he said.
Vastanvi, who arrived in Vadodara from Delhi en route Nandurbar, was accorded a warm welcome by Muslim community members who had gathered in large numbers.
