Ahmedabad: A day after opposition parties like the BJP and the Shiv Sena stalled the proceedings of Parliament over Home Minister P Chidambaram's "saffron terror" remark, Gujarat Chief Minister lashed out at the Centre on Saturday and demanded an apology from the Prime Minister.
Modi accused the Congress of indulging in vote-bank politics and said Chidambaram's comments insulted the national flag.
"Congress is into vote-bank politics to such an extent that it will destroy the country...we are being called terrorists...saffron is our culture...PM must apologise," he said.
Modi added that saffron resembled sacrifice and that terrorism had no colour.
"You see pictures of Dayanand Saraswati. They wear saffron. They represent sacrifice. Are they terrorists?
Do you salute the national flag? Isn't saffron the colour of people and the country? This Central Government is calling you a terrorist," Modi said.
The Gujarat Chief Minister also sought to remind the Congress that it was a committee set up by the party, after India achieved independence, that decided that saffron would be one of the colours of the flag.
Modi also asked people to write to the government to register their protest.
"You all should write to the Centre in protest but peace must not be shattered," he said.
