Patna: Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has claimed that the state government did not enter into any deal with the Maoists for the safe release of the three abducted policemen.
"There was no deal with the Maoists for the release of the policemen. The three abducted policemen have been released. It's a relief that the three have been safely released but it is sad that one abducted policemen has been killed," Kumar said on Monday while addressing a press conference in Patna.
The Bihar Chief Minister, who had appealed to the Maoists to release the abducted policemen on Saturday after an all-party meet, thanked the political unity and consensus for the safe release of the policemen after the eight-day hostage crisis.
"My good wishes for the families of the policemen. We took all necessary steps to handle the situation. The people of Bihar were united in criticising the act of abduction of the policemen which also led to pressure for their release. The unity amongst all the political groups led to the release," said Kumar.
"The appeal made after the all-party meet also helped a lot in the release of the abducted policemen. I appreciate the efforts made by the police force after the abduction of their fellow policemen," he said.
Kumar also appealed to the Maoists to leave violence and join the mainstream. He said that he was ready to invite the Maoists to join the political process of the country.
Saying that the Maoists should come forward for talks, he also suggested that the rebels should also contest the upcoming Bihar Assembly elections.
