New Delhi: At a time when religious issues are taking predominance over development issues of the NDA government at the Centre, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday again warned the ruling BJP MPs against crossing the "Lakshman Rekha" (limits) by making controversial statements, sources said.
The PM's warning came in the weekly BJP Parliamentary Meeting held every Tuesday. This is the second time that Modi has warned his party MPs against crossing their limits. His first warning had come when Minister Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti had made controversial remarks. Modi had then cautioned MPs to avoid such comments.
The PM is also learnt to have said development work undertaken by the party's MPs must be "visible and not just on paper". The ruling party feels such comments are "derailing the development agenda" of the government and is uniting the opposition against it, the sources said.
The PM is apparently trying hard to put agenda at the forefront of governance and controversial issues are derailing the whole process. Earlier it was Jyoti's controversial remarks and now conversion issue is raging in Uttar Pradesh. Jyoti had reportedly said at a public meeting in New Delhi, "Aapko tay karna hai ki Dilli mein sarkar Ramzadon ki banegi ya haramzadon ki." (You have to decide if you want a government in Delhi to be led by the children of Lord Ram or illegitimate children.)
The comments come as Rajya Sabha, where the government is in minority, continues to face the heat over conversion row and comments by party MP Yogi Adityanath, who reportedly said that there is nothing wrong if people re-convert to Hinduism if they are doing it willingly.
