New Delhi: Despite Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi's controversial hard talk, the Bharatiya Janata Party on Friday chose to give Hindutva a surprise miss in its election manifesto.
The party, instead, harped on a development agenda and said the state’s economy will grow at 12 per cent per annum if the party was voted back to power.
"Garibi mukt Gujarat (poverty-free state) is the number one promise that we have made in this manifesto," Gujarat BJP President Purshottam Rupala Das quoted as saying by PTI.
Das released the document in the presence of senior BJP leader Arun Jaitley and state Finance Minister Vaju Vala.
In a fleeting mention of terror, the manifesto said the state government's and the party's war against terrorism was on.
It also said the Sardar Sarovar Yojna will be over by 2010 and promised housing for all in five years’ time.
It also promised electricity production will be doubled in the next five years and all families below poverty line will get free insurance.
"This growth will be achieved by doubling our agriculture production," Rupala was quoted as saying. He also said farmers of Gujarat will be given 14-hour uninterrupted electricity as compared to eight hours being provided now.
Interestingly, the manifesto also promises to make yoga education compulsory in primary classes.
The two phase polls for the 182-member Assembly will be held on December 11 and 16.
