New Delhi: Union Home Minister P Chidambaram became the target of Sikh anger on Tuesday as a senior journalist flung his shoe at him at a press conference in New Delhi.
The journalist, Jarnail Singh, was angry at the Central Bureau of Investigation's clean chit to Congress leader Jagdish Tytler in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots.
But before Jarnail flung his shoe at Chidambaram, he asked the Home Minister if the CBI acted under pressure in giving Tytler a clean chit.
Here is the transcript of Chidambaram's conversation with Jarnail.
Jarnail Singh: Till you took charge of Home Ministry CBI was an independent body.
P Chidambaram: What is your question?
Jarnail Singh: Is CBI is working under pressure from the government since it has given clean chit to Jagdish Tytler?
P Chidambaram: Firstly CBI is not under the administration of Home Ministry. Secondly no ministry in my knowledge has ever put pressure on CBI. Thirdly CBI has only submitted the report. No argument please. The court can either accept or refuse the report or can ask CBI to investigate the matter further. Let us be patient. Let us wait for the court to take up the report. Sorry no argument.
Jarnail Singh: It's unjust. Why no justice for us?
P Chidambaram: No argument please. You can't use this platform like this. You are using the forum.
The next moment Singh threw a shoe at Chidambaram.
But Chidambaram kept his cool and asked the security personnel to take Singh away.
"Please take him away. Gently, gently," said Chidambaram.
