New Delhi: While DMK has pulled out of the UPA government, even Samajwadi Party which has been extending outside support to the ruling coalition has been playing hardball. The UPA government has been claiming that it is stable and there is no threat of elections taking place before the Lok Sabha terms ends.
According to the IBN7 Political Editor Sukesh Ranjan, the President has the letters of support of the BSP and SP. Whatever the parties may say but as long as they do not take give a letter to the President that they are not going to support the government, the ruling coalition has the numbers and is safe. The government is also breathing easy because the BJP is unlikely to bring a no-confidence motion and the party does not trust the Samajwadi Party.
The Samajwadi Party also fears that negotiations are going on between Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and the UPA government. The statement by Nitish Kumar that Congress knows how to save a government and Lok Sabha elections will take place on time even when the Centre is under pressure and is in minority is rarely seen in politics.
During the Adhikar Rally in Delhi on Sunday, Nitish had stated that he would not look either left or right but whoever gave special status to Bihar would rule over Delhi. Nitish Kumar also met with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Finance Minister P Chidambaram on Monday.
So the Samajwadi Party is treading cautiously and feels that if a situation arise which forces Nitish Kumar to come to the rescue of the UPA, then the party could be accused of trying to topple the government with the help of communal forces. Samajwadi party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav would certainly not want to be in such a situation.
