In a setback for the Gujarat government, the state High Court on Friday put a stay on compulsory voting in municipal elections.

The state government had in July notified compulsory voting, making Gujarat the first state in the country to implement any such practice.

Under the law a voter is liable to face punitive action in case he or she fails to vote in the local body elections. The local body polls in the state are likely to be held in September and October.
