Hisar: Hisar, a traditional stronghold of Congress, is witnessing a three-way contest between Congress's Savitri Jindal, Bharatiya Janata Party's Dr Kamal Gupta and Haryana Janhit Congress candidate Gautam Sardana.
Even as voting will take place on October 15, Savitri Jindal seems to be leading the race. Anoop Kumar, a resident of Hisar, said, "We vote for the candidate and not for the party. Savitri Jindal is a clear winner in this election. No other party leader can match her. We have seen her work and she has done a lot for the development of this area."
BJP's Dr Kamal Gupta unapproachability seems to be the reason behind his unpopularity. "We hardly see him in the area. We want a leader who can listen to our concerns and act upon them," said, Jagdish Rajpal, a shop owner in Hisar.
When asked about the Narendra Modi wave in Hisar, locals said that there is no such Modi effect in the constituency and it is completely a Congress bastion. Ram Kumar, another resident of Hisar, said, "We don't see any Modi wave here. Savitri Jindal is the face of this constituency and will always be."
Savitri Jindal is also one of the richest female candidate but still she prefers to do door to door campaigning and public meetings to woo her voters. She had been a minister of state for power in the Bhupinder Singh Hooda government from 2005 to 2009. Her industrialist-cum-politician husband, OP Jindal, who was a minister in the Hooda government, was killed when his private helicopter crashed near the Haryana-Uttar Pradesh border March 2005.
According to the locals, HJC's Gautam Sardana can still get some votes from the Punjabi community of Hisar. "Valmikis and Sikhs will surely vote in favour of Sardana. He will get some votes but over all Jindal will be the clear winner," Renu Bhalla from Hisar said.
