New Delhi: Congress is throwing its weight behind Prime Minister Singh. In a statement issued on Saturday, the party said the nuclear deal is a win-win situation
Sonia Gandhi also made an interesting move. She told a high powered meeting of Congress general secretaries to prepare for general election but there was much less ambiguity.
“The Lok Sabha polls issue was not discussed but the party has to be ready,” said part spokesperson Veerappa Moily.
Within hours of the meeting, the Congress message was loud and clear. Prakash Karat would be given the right to get away by levelling charges. So the party issued a four-page detailed statement. Nuclear plants are running at less than 50 per cent capacity for want of the fuel which the country cannot access without the IAEA agreeement and the NSG waiver for nuclear trade.
The agreement is a clear win-win situation for India.
Interesting also is that Sonia's begun putting her weight behind the Prime Minister even after a Congress internal report said that the party was hardly poll-prepared and that its organisation machinery was in need of a revamp in many states.
Sonia is banking on party's flagship programmes like NREGA and loan waivers to improve the grim scenario caused by inflation. Besides, she has to deal with allies who are far from poll-ready
That the party was tilting towards Prime Minister became clearer when even ace troubleshooter Pranab Mukherjee came out strongly in the PM's defence.
“Why should PM be blamed? He is thinking in the interests of the party,” he said.
It is not yet a green signal for the Prime Minister but the signs are all there. The party may go with him.
