Centre slack on Mullaperiyar Dam issue: DMK
The DMK pledged its cooperation for any 'constructive' effort taken by ruling AIADMK in Tamil Nadu.

Chennai: DMK, a key partner of Congress-led UPA, on Thursday accused the Centre of remaining 'slack' on the Mullaperiyar dam issue as it pledged its cooperation for any 'constructive' effort taken by ruling AIADMK in Tamil Nadu.

Participating in the one-day special session of the Assembly to adopt a unanimous resolution to assert Tamil Nadu's rights over the century-old dam, Stalin said the Centre was 'slack' on solving the issue, echoing the views of his father and DMK chief M Karunanidhi.

The 88-year-old DMK patriarch had recently said the Centre was known for taking 'belated decisions' and insisted that it should at least now take timely action on the dam row involving Kerala and Tamil Nadu.

Stalin, the DMK floor leader, also charged Kerala with showing "no respect," for Tamil Nadu.

Assuring DMK's support to the AIADMK government on the issue, he said, "We wholeheartedly welcome any constructive effort by the government. We will cooperate with it."

Tamils and their property were being targeted and his own party colleague and legislator N Eramakrishnan was a victim, he said.

A fuel station and some other property owned by Eramakrishnan, representing Cumbum constituency bordering Kerala, were targeted recently allegedly in the wake of the dam row.

Holding that the existing structure was weak, Kerala wants to construct a new dam in its place while Tamil Nadu is stiffly opposed to it saying the dam was safe.

What's your reaction?
