New Delhi: Political parties in Maharashtra are making a last minute attempt to woo voters to vote for them during the BMC elections in Mumbai and nine other municipal corporations in the state.
The elections are slated to begin on February 1. Altogether nearly 1.57 crore voters would choose from among the 9,246 candidates in fray for the 10 civic bodies to elect 1,162 corporators, including 227 in Mumbai, India's richest municipal corporation.
Counting of votes would begin at 9 am on February 2 and the results are expected to be available by afternoon as electronic voting machines (EVMs) are being used.
According to a report in PTI, Shiv Sena, which along with its ally BJP, is seeking to retain power in BMC, on Monday asked State Election Commission (SEC) to 'modify' the EVMs in light of `reports about some people claiming to manipulate it'.
However, State Election Commissioner Nand Lal was quoted by PTI as saying, "There is no question of heeding to Sena's demand. These EVMs are in use all over the country. The Government has made these machines, and not the SEC."
