The incident followed a controversy that erupted after AIMIM MP Asaduddin Owaisi chanted ‘Jai Palestine’ slogan as he concluded his oath. Amid an uproar from the treasury benches, Radha Mohan Singh, who was in the Chair at the time, assured the members that anything apart from the oath will not go on record. Union minister Shobha Karandlaje registered a formal complaint against Owaisi.
Congress MP Rahul Gandhi, on the other hand, held up a copy of the Constitution while taking the oath and chanted ‘Jai Hind, Jai Samvidhan’ during the conclusion.
Besides Rahul Gandhi, Akhilesh Yadav, Dimple Yadav, Hema Malini, Asaduddin Owaisi and Kanimozhi Karunanidhi were among the prominent members to be sworn in on the second day of the first session of the 18th Lok Sabha.
Union minister and BJP leader Narayan Rane, Supriya Sule of the NCP (SP), Arvind Sawant of the Shiv Sena (UBT) and Shrikant Shinde of the Shiv Sena were also among the newly-elected members who took oath on Tuesday.
After taking oath, Sule touched Pro-tem Speaker Bhartruhari Mahtab’s feet and also sought blessings from Union minister Nitin Gadkari.
Elections for speaker will take place on Wednesday as the opposition’s last-minute decided to go for a rare contest came after senior BJP leaders did not agree to its precondition that the INDIA bloc must be offered the post of Deputy Speaker in lieu of supporting Om Birla.
