Itanagar: Exhorting people of the state to reciprocate the gesture of facilitating a big financial package for Arunachal Pradesh by Congress President Sonia Gandhi, AICC General Secretary and Union minister N Narayanswami on Thursday appealed to the people to vote for the party in the coming general elections.
Kick-starting the poll campaign at the Vikash rally at Indira Gandhi Park in Itanagar, Narayanswami came down heavily on the 'unprincipled politics of BJP to hoodwink the people by claiming the achievements of Congress-led UPA Government as their own.
"The UPA Government gave Rs 22,000 crore under the PM's package last year which would expedite all round development of this border state," Narayanswami, who is Union Minister of State for Planning and Parliamentary Affairs and party's incharge for Arunachal, Chattishgarh and Nagaland, said and credited UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi for that.
Promising the fund-poor state could not fully implement the 6th Central Pay Commission recommendations for its employees, Narayanswami said "after the election when UPA will return to power it would fulfill the commitments of Chief Minister Dorjee Khandu and APCC president Nabam Tuki to pay the arrears.
Narayanswami, however, cautioned some party leaders, without naming anybody, who are trying to create a rift in the party and asked them to refrain from such activities and stand united to strengthen the hands of Gandhi at this crucial time.
Chief Minister Dojee Khandu highlighted the numerous achievements of his government since he took over the rein after disloding Gegong Apang 23 months ago.
Apang was present on the dias along with other party leaders.
Khandu said when he took over he had promised to revive the state Cooperative Apex Bank, streamline the PDS, check corruption, and claimed his government achieved all these within a short period besides getting the PM's package.
Lamenting some party leaders had still complained to the high command that the PM's package is not being implemented properly, Khandu recalled Planning Commission Deputy Chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia himself came down to Arunachal and after inspecting gave an appreciation letter to
the state government.
Rajya Sabha member Mukut Mithi said during his tenure as chief minister the then NDA Human Resources Development Minister Murli Manohar Joshi visited the state. He was requested to grant central university status to state's lone university which he failed to deliver, but it was the UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi who met the long-fulfilled dream.
