Kerala Congress on Thursday rejected the organisational support offered by the SDPI, the political wing of the now-banned PFI, for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections but welcomed individual voters to support the UDF.
While speaking to the media, Opposition leader and senior Congress legislator VD Satheesan said that the Congress opposes both majority and minority communalism.
“We oppose majority and minority communalism. Support offered by SDPI to UDF is being viewed under these circumstances. Each individual can vote according to their wishes. We wish that everyone votes for the UDF but in the case of organisations, this is our stand,” Satheesan stated, refuting to provide further details.
The Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI), the political arm of the banned Popular Front of India, had announced its support to the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) in Kerala for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections on Monday.
However, the Congress leadership clarified that the UDF had not made any agreements with the SDPI. Satheesan reiterated that while several parties were supporting the UDF, no discussions had been held with the SDPI nor had any agreements been reached.
The Lok Sabha elections in Kerala are scheduled for April 26.
