Women Voters Continue to Surpass Men in Turnout in Rajasthan Elections | News18 Analysis
Rajasthan elections: In a state where no political party has retained power post 1993, women have shown their dominance in the elections since 2013

Even as the state has more male voters, women seem to have taken the front seat when it comes to electing a new government in Rajasthan at least for the last three polls, official numbers analysed by News18 show.

In a state where no political party has retained power post 1993, women have shown their dominance in the elections since 2013.

In 2008, when the Congress rose to power ending the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) rule, the state witnessed a voter turnout of 66.25%. Women turnout was 65.31%, while men’s was 67.10%. That year, the state had 1.90 crore men voters against 1.72 crore women voters.

The next election, in 2013, the BJP rose to power and voter turnout improved significantly to 75.04%. Of the state’s 4.08 crore voters, 2.15 crore were men, while 1.93 crore were women. However, in terms of turnout, women voters (75.44%) outnumbered men (74.67%).

In 2018, the Congress again came to power, with the state reporting a slight dip in turnout at 74.06%. That year too, there were more men voters, but women turnout was higher. Of the state’s 4.77 crore voters, 2.49 crore were men and 2.28 were women. In terms of turnout, men were behind at 73.49%, while women were leading with 74.67% turnout.

This time, the state had 5.25 crore voters, including 2.73 crore men and 2.51 crore women. When it comes to voting better, women in the state yet again proved their dominance. Against men’s turnout of 74.53%, women’s turnout was 74.72%. There were more than 20 seats where women voters have outnumbered men, the Election Commission of India (ECI) data shows.

In terms of numbers, 3.92 crore voters took part in the elections, of which 1.88 crore were women and 2.03 crore men.

Voter turnout measures the percentage of voters that have actually taken part in an election. Male turnout is the percentage of men taking part in the elections out of the total male voters. Female voter turnout means women taking part in the elections of the total female voters. As male voters are more in numbers, even despite lower turnout, their number of voters are higher than females.

Further, in at least 35 seats, the voter turnout was more than 80 percent with highest in Kushalgarh at 88.13%, followed by Pokaran (87.79%), Tijara (86.11%), Nimbahera (85.58%) and Ghatol (85.35%).

Polling in Rajasthan completed last week and counting of votes will be done on Sunday.
