Weather Update: Yellow Alert In 5 Uttarakhand Districts After Cloudburst; IMD Also Warns Of Heavy To Very Heavy Rainfall In These States
Parts of Delhi received light to moderate rainfall on Saturday, and according to IMD, the national capital is likely to receive light rainfall over the next five days

Several states along the Indian peninsula in the Eastern, western and southern parts of the country are likely to receive heavy rainfall over the coming few days. According to the India Meteorological Department’s (IMD) latest bulletin, very heavy rainfall is likely over Gujarat and Maharashtra during the next five days. Heavy showers are also expected over West Bengal, Odisha, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh for the next three days.

Meanwhile, parts of Delhi also received light to moderate rainfall on Saturday, and according to IMD, the national capital is likely to receive light rainfall over the next five days.

Furthermore, a cloudburst in a border village of Nepal triggered a flash flood in Khotila village in Uttarakhand on Saturday, as waters of the swelling Kali river rushed into homes, filling them with sludge and killing a woman. The village is located near Dharchula town in the Pithoragarh district. The cloudburst occurred past midnight in Bangabagar village across the India-Nepal border.

Heavy rains also wreaked havoc in Khari Gali and Malla Bazar in Eldhara of Uttarakhand’s Dharchula, where many houses were destroyed. Uttarkashi’s Gangotri and Yamunotri and Dehradun continue to receive heavy rainfall. Yamunotri National Highway is closed near Dabarkot due to heavy rainfall, while Gangotri Highway is also closed near Helgu Gad.

IMD Weather Predictions for the Next Few Days

  • Four people were killed in lightning strikes in Rajasthan’s Jhalawar district as light to heavy rainfall occurred at isolated places in eastern parts of the state during the last 24 hours, officials said on Sunday. The deaths due to lightning were reported from Asnawar, Khanpur, Mandawar and Dangipura in the district on Saturday, they said.
  • The Met department on Sunday forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall in Gangetic West Bengal till Tuesday morning owing to a depression that lay over south Odisha. The weatherman warned of squally wind reaching speed of 40 to 50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph along and off West Bengal coast and asked fishermen not to venture into the Bay of Bengal till Tuesday.
  • In its bulletin released Saturday, IMD forecasted that fairly widespread rainfall with isolated heavy falls and thunderstorms and lightning is very likely over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal and Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam on Sunday.
  • Heavy rainfall is also very likely over coastal and north interior Karnataka, Kerala and Mahe during Sunday and Monday and in Telangana till Tuesday.
  • Telangana’s capital Hyderabad received moderate rainfall on Sunday afternoon, As per IMD, North Telangana and the central parts of the state are expected to get widespread rainfall activity in the next 24 hours.
  • Meanwhile, fairly widespread/widespread rainfall with isolated heavy falls and thunderstorms/lightning is also very likely over Chhattisgarh, Gangetic West Bengal and Marathwada on Sunday and Monday and in Vidarbha and Odisha during Till Tuesday.
  • Heavy Showers with thunderstorms and lightning are also expected over sub-Himalayan West Bengal on Monday; in Madhya Pradesh and Jharkhand between Monday and Wednesday and In Bihar on Tuesday and Wednesday.
  • Gujarat State, Madhya Maharashtra and Konkan and Goa are also expected to receive heavy showers during the next 5 days.
  • The northeast part of India is also expected to receive heavy rainfall during the next three days. As per IMD, fairly widespread/widespread rainfall with isolated heavy falls and thunderstorms/lightning is very likely over Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura during till Tuesday.
  • Furthermore, fairly widespread to widespread light/moderate rainfall with isolated heavy falls and thunderstorm/lightning is also very likely over Himachal Pradesh and East Rajasthan on Tuesday and Wednesday and in Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, West Rajasthan on Wednesday.
  • Uttarakhand is forecasted to receive heavy showers during the next 5 days.
  • Light to moderate rainfall with the possibility of thundershowers is also likely to occur in Mumbai and its suburbs today, according to Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).

Alerts Issued

IMD Director General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra said that Odisha is likely to witness more rainfall activities as a fresh cyclonic circulation is likely to brew over the Bay of Bengal around September 17-18.

The state government has asked all the district collectors to remain prepared and deal with crisis situation as per protocol.

IMD has also advised fishermen to not venture into the northwest and the west-central Bay of Bengal and along and off Andhra Pradesh, Odisha and West Bengal coasts due to rough to very rough sea conditions today.
