Watch: Injury Scare for Shubman Gill as he Retires Hurt After a Fine Half-century in World Cup Semi-final
India opener Shubman Gill was attended to by the team physio briefly before he walked off the field.

India opener Shubman Gill was seen struggling with cramps during the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 semi-final against New Zealand at the Wankhede Stadium following which he retired out on Wednesday.

Gill had made a superb start and completed a fine half-century, nearing what appeared to be a maiden world cup hundred before the Mumbai heat began having its impact. He went down forcing the Indian team physio to rush to the middle.

After a brief treatment, Gill walked off the pitch having scored 79 off 65 with the help of eight fours and three sixes. Shreyas Iyer replaced him in the middle.

Gill, though, could come back to bat later on if needed.

Earlier, India captain Rohit Sharma blazed away at Wankhede Stadium to kickstart the innings after opting to bat first.

He clubbed four fours and four sixes in a rapid 29-ball 47 while adding 71 runs for the first wicket with Gill in 8.2 overs.

Rohit perished after being outfoxed by a slower delivery from Tim Southee as he went aerial before his New Zealand counterpart Kane Williamson took an impressive catch to bring an end to the entertaining innings.

Gill, who happily watched his senior tear apart the New Zealand new ball pacers, took over once Rohit exited as he began finding boundaries to extend India’s excellent start once the Powerplay ended.

He soon raised a brisk fifty, taking 41 deliveries to get there and was motoring along nicely.

However, midway through the 22nd over after Kohli called for a single, Gill looked in discomfort before deciding it was safer to recuperate than continue his innings at that moment.

India have qualified for the semi-final of the ODI showpiece third time in a row and are hoping to make it to the summit clash this time around in search of their first ICC trophy in nearly a decade.
