ODI World Cup 2023 Semifinals Race: How England Can Still Qualify for Knockouts After Loss to Sri Lanka
England can mathematically still qualify for the ODI World Cup 2023 semifinals, but they will have to win all of their remaining four games, and hope other teams drop points.

Jos Buttler-led England cricket team suffered a massive 8-wicket defeat to Sri Lanka at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on Thursday which has dented the defending champions’ hopes of qualifying for the semifinal. Jos Buttler’s men have slipped to ninth place in the ODI World Cup 2023 points table, even though mathematically they still have an outside chance of reaching the semifinals.

While Buttler himself conceded that England’s chance of reaching the semifinals took a major hit after their defeat to Sri Lanka, they still have an outside chance of making it into the top four spots, which would guarantee them a place in the semifinals.

How England can qualify for ODI World Cup semifinals after their defeat to Sri Lanka?

England currently sit in ninth place in the World Cup points table with a NRR of -1.634, having won just one game from five outings. Buttler and Co. still have to face India, Australia, Netherlands and Pakistan, and they will need to win all of the four remaining games to make it into the semifinals.

After winning their remaining four games, England can only reach a maximum of 10 points, the defending champions have to ensure that their NRR improves in the upcoming matches. That means they will not only have to beat India in Lucknow on Sunday by a big margin, but they will have to repeat that same feat against Australia, the Netherlands and then against Pakistan too.

Even after reaching 10 points and having a positive NRR might not be enough to propel the English side into the semifinals, they will hope that Australia end up losing their remaining games, the Aussies have six points, and if they win atleast two of their remaining matches against New Zealand, England, Afghanistan or Bangladesh it will be curtains for Buttler’s side.

England will also hope that Sri Lanka and Pakistan also drop points in their remaining games.
