India’s unemployment rate has declined to a one-year low in September in rural areas despite weak monsoon, according to a Bloomberg report citing data from the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy.
According to the data, the overall unemployment rate fell to 7.09 per cent last month, from 8.10 per cent in August. That’s the lowest reading since September last year, according to the Bloomberg report.
In the rural areas, the unemployment rate dropped to 6.20 per cent, compared with 7.11 per cent in August. The urban unemployment rate dropped to 8.94 per cent from 10.09 per cent in the same period.
In the urban areas, unemployment also witnessed a decline.
On September 26, Prime Minister Narendra Modi distributed about 51,000 appointment letters to newly-inducted employees in various government departments. The ‘Rozgar Mela’ will be held at 46 locations across the country.
The new employees will be joining various ministries and departments, including Department of Posts, Indian Audit & Accounts Department, Department of Atomic Energy, Department of Revenue, Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Defence, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, among others.
