England were on the receiving end of one of the biggest upsets in the history of the ICC ODI World Cup as Afghanistan prevailed by 69 runs over Jos Buttler’s men to jump to sixth place in the World Cup 2023 points table.

Rohit Sharma-led Indian team sit comfortably at the top of the pile after their 7-wicket win over Pakistan, level on points with second-placed New Zealand but the Men in Blue have a better net run rate.

Following their defeat to Afghanistan, England slipped to fifth place, the Afghans who were previously rock bottom jumped to sixth, trailing the defending champions on NRR.

Record five-time World Cup holders Australia are sitting at rock bottom of the points table having failed to open their account in the ODI World Cup 2023 after two defeats back to back.

With three wins from as many games, India are at the top of the ICC World Cup 2023 points table with six points and a net run rate of +1.821. New Zealand also have six points, but they are second with a NRR of +1.604.

Courtesy of their massive wins over Australia and Sri Lanka, South Africa are third on the points table with 4 points and a NRR of +2.360.

Babar Azam’s Pakistan occupy the fourth and final qualification spot on October 15, having four points and a NRR of -0.137.

Jos Buttler’s men slipped to fifth place having just two points and a NRR of -0.084, while Hashmatullah Shahidi’s Afghanistan jumped to sixth with their first win in 14 World Cup games, along with a NRR of -0.652.

Bangladesh are in seventh place with two points, but an inferior NRR of -0.699.

Sri Lanka are eighth, with zero points having lost both their World Cup games so far. Their NRR is -1.161. Netherlands are second bottom with a NRR of -1.800 while Australia are tenth having a NRR of -1.846.
