Diana Edulji has become the first ever India women player to be inducted into the ICC Hall of Fame.

The ICC on Monday named three players including Edulji, Virender Sehwag and Aravinda de Silva as the latest inductees into its Hall of Fame.

Edulji, a former India captain, played a key role in raising the graph of Indian women’s cricket both as a player and later as an administrator.

“At the outset, I would like to thank the ICC and the Jury for having selected me to be inducted in the ICC Hall Of Fame 2023,” Edulji was quoted as saying by the ICC.

She played 20 Tests and 34 ODIs scoring a combined 615 runs in them and taking 109 wickets as well.

She was also part of the Committee of Administrators (CoA) appointed by the Supreme Court of India to run the BCCI affairs.

“It indeed is a great honour to be the first Indian Women Cricketer to be inducted and join a galaxy of cricketers, male and female from across the world,” Edulji said.

“I am delighted to be considered for this award. It’s not only a proud moment for me, my family and friends but also for BCCI and Indian Women’s Cricket,” she added.

Edulji was part of the squad that played West Indies in 1976 in what was India women’s team first ever official Test match.

She took part in three ICC Cricket World Cups, leading India in two of them.

She was given the Arjuna Award in 1983 and Padma Shri in 2002.

Sehwag, one of the finest opening batters to have played the game, thanked the ICC for the honour.

“I would like to thank the ICC and the jury for inducting me with this honour,” Sehwag said.

“I feel extremely grateful for having spent a great part of my life doing what I loved most, ‘hitting the cricket ball’. I would also like to thank my family, friends, people I played with, and countless people who prayed for me selflessly,” he added.
