1985-batch IAS Amit Khare, Advisor to Prime Minister, Gets Extension
The tenure of 1985 batch IAS officer was scheduled to be completed in October. His tenure has now been made coterminous with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The Appointments Committee of the Union Cabinet has extended the tenure of Amit Khare, who is an adviser to the Prime Minister. He has been granted an extension under the regular terms and service of the position.

The tenure of the 1985 batch IAS officer was scheduled to be completed in October 2023. His tenure has now been made coterminous with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

It was on October 12, 2021, when Khare was appointed to the advisor position by the Committee. Before holding the position, he was working as a secretary in I&B, Government of India.

Amit Khare had been known as the man behind the National Education Policy 2020. He also played a significant role in bringing key changes in the I and B ministry concerning digital media regulations.

Khare succeeded, ex-cabinet secretary PK Sinha and former secretary Amarjeet Sinha, who could not complete their tenures in the Prime Minister’s Office and had to leave mid-way.

Before holding top positions in the cabinet, Amit Khare had served as Collector and Deputy Commissioner of 4 districts namely Darbhanga, Begusarai, West Singhbhum (Chaibasa), and Patna. He has also served as the Vice Chancellor of Ranchi University.

He is credited for his role in unveiling the ‘Fodder Scam’ of Bihar in 1996 as the then Deputy Commissioner of West Singhbhum (Chaibasa). He also launched an ‘Anti-Superstition Campaign’ in the district to save women from harassment due to superstition prevailing in society. His efforts were successful when the Bihar government passed legislation on the same.

He first served the central government as the Joint Secretary of Higher Education from August 2008 to August 2014. There he looked after UNESCO, education policy book promotion, and copyrights. He also served as member secretary of the National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority.
