Greta Gerwig Breaks Silence On Best Director Oscar Snub For Barbie
Greta Gerwig asserted that she was delighted to get an Oscar nomination for Barbie, indicating that she was unbothered by not being nominated for the Best Director award.

Greta Gerwig might not have been nominated for the Best Director award for Barbie at the 2024 Oscars. But despite the masses voicing their protest against the decision, Gerwig seems to be unaffected by the disappointment. On January 23, Barbie was bestowed with eight Oscar nominations. While Ryan Gosling, who played the role of Ken in the movie was selected for the prestigious award, Margot Robbie, who essayed the titular character did not make the mark, much like the director. Now, in a recent media interaction, Gerwig has finally broken her silence on the Oscar snub, taking the matter quite positively.

In an interview with Time magazine on February 21, for its Women of the Year issue, Greta Gerwig addressed the Barbie-related Oscar issue. She recounted an incident when one of her friend’s mothers expressed her disbelief at Gerwig not getting nominated. In her response, the director said, “But I did. I got an Oscar nomination.’ She was like, ‘Oh, that’s wonderful for you!’ I was like, ‘I know!’”

If it was anything that saddened Greta Gerwig, it was Margot Robbie not being nominated for the Best Actress award in a Leading Role. “Of course, I wanted it for Margot,” admitted Gerwig, before adding that she was just happy that all the cast and crew members of Barbie will be “getting together” for the upcoming awards night.

In the conversation, Greta Gerwig also pointed out that she was nominated for the Best Adapted Screenplay for Barbie along with her husband Noah Baumbach, implying that she was looking forward to winning the title rather than dwelling in the past. Gerwig co-wrote the script with Baumbach. Also, Margot Robbie who co-produced the film with her husband Tom Ackerley was nominated for the Best Picture award.

Earlier while attending a SAG-AFRA discussion, Margot Robbie too spoke on her Oscar dismissal, accepting the setback graciously. “There’s no way to feel sad when you know you’re this blessed,” she said before adding that Greta Gerwig should have been nominated. According to a report by Variety, the actress was “beyond ecstatic” for Barbie’s 8 nomination haul.

The 96th Academy Awards will be held at the Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood in California, USA on March 10.
