Denis Villeneuve On Collaborating With Hans Zimmer For Dune: Part Two
Ahead of the sequel’s release, Dennis Villeneuve spoke about reuniting with Oscar-winning composer Hans Zimmer for Dune Part Two.

Denis Villeneuve’s upcoming film Dune: Part Two is all set to capture the hearts of movie enthusiasts in just a few days. The follow-up story adapted from Frank Herbert’s novel comes after the 2021 movie became one of the highest-grossing films, which also secured six Academy Awards. Ahead of the sequel’s release, Villeneuve recently sat for an interview with Pinkvilla and the director spoke about reuniting with Oscar-winning composer Hans Zimmer for Timothee Chalamet and Zendaya starrer.

Interestingly, both Villeneuve and Zimmer share a deep connection and passion for Herbert’s novel since their young days which brought them together for this film. Admiring Zimmer’s dedication, the filmmaker revealed that the musician didn’t stop making music for the film even months after the release of the first instalment. Villeneuve claims he was in tears after he listened to the compositions, especially the love theme for characters Paul Atreides and Chani.

Villeneuve said, “Hans and I have shared the same passion, the same history with the book from when we were young. Hans was the first artist to join me on Part One and he was the first to join me in Part Two. Six months after Dune released, Hans was still composing, and he was still scoring the movie. I was receiving music from him and I said, ‘Hans, the movies in theatres right now and you’re still sending me music.’ And he said, ‘Yeah, yeah, yeah, but it’s for you, I want you to be inspired for Part Two.’ I cannot stop right now. Just listen and it will inspire you for when you write.”

Further, Denis Villeneuve shared intriguing details about Hans Zimmer’s creative process and shared that the composer delved deep into the universe of the Harkonnens, as he started creating instruments and conducting thorough research. Villeneuve specifically wanted music for Feyd-Rautha and the Harkonnen world, with the main focus on the Emperor’s theme. However, the director’s heart was touched by the love theme for Chani and Paul. Wishing for the music that would be heart-wrenching and beautiful, Villeneuve claims he was satisfied with the outcome, which moved him to tears.

Apart from Timothee Chalamet and Zendaya, Dune: Part Two also features Rebecca Ferguson, Josh Brolin, Austin Butler, Florence Pugh, Dave Bautista, Christopher Walken, Lea Seydoux, Stellan Skarsgard, Charlotte Rampling, Anya Taylor-Joy and Javier Bardem. The movie is set to hit theatres on March 1, 2024.
