Superhero sequel ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’ debuted as the top movie at North American box-offices this Memorial day weekend with ticket sales of $65 million, industry figures showed on Sunday.
In the United States, the three-day holiday weekend -- the unofficial start of summer -- is popular with moviegoers, and cinemas generally do a booming business, although box office watchers remarked that ticket sales this year have been uncharacteristically light.
Disney's ‘Alice Through the Looking Glass’ opened in the number two spot, selling $28.1 million in tickets.
‘The Angry Birds Movie’ was third with $18.7 million.
Another comic book-themed flick, ‘Captain America: Civil War’ was fourth with $15.1 million, according to industry tracker Exhibitor Relations.
‘Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising’ grossed $9.1 million for fifth place.
Rounding out the top 10 were:
‘The Jungle Book’ ($6.9 million)
‘The Nice Guys’ ($6.3 million)
‘Money Monster’ ($4.2 million)
‘Love and Friendship’ ($2.5 million)
‘Zootopia’ ($831,000)
