Do you know how the love story between Jaya Bachchan and Amitabh Bachchan blossomed? Although they faced challenges, the couple – whose love story dates back to the early 70s – have been married for over four decades. They have inspired generations and given them relationship goals. Not everyone supported their relationship when the two started dating. According to reports, Rajesh Khanna, who was a friend of Jaya Bachchan, expressed reservations about their associations. He also told her to stay away from Big B, as per reports. On the sets of the 1972 film Bawarchi, Rajesh Khanna reportedly insulted Amitabh Bachchan and ignored him when he visited the film’s set in order to meet Jaya Bachchan. Rajesh Khanna was reportedly very insecure about the rising star and would stop Jaya from meeting him; but the actress did not pay any heed to Rajesh Khanna’s misbehaviour.
On this note, let’s take a look at how the couple fell in love and got married. It was the early 70s when the Bollywood Film Industry was entering a whole new era with films that were ahead of its time. Big B, who was back then a rising star, was fascinated upon seeing Jaya in a magazine ad. Upon enquiring about her, he realised that they were to soon work together in Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s directional movie titled Guddi, where Big B and Jaya Bachchan met for the first time formally.
Jaya Bachchan’s initial admiration for Amitabh Bachchan is mainly because of his lineage, as he was the son of the esteemed Harivansh Rai Bachchan. Even in many interviews, she admitted that she sensed an exclusive spark in him and believed he was destined for great things in the Indian Cinema. Slowly, her feelings started to evolve for him. It was Jaya who first sensed a love connection between them. Their time in the 1972 film Ek Nazar was also pivotal as Amitabh Bachchan began to realise his growing feelings for her.
Before the release of the 1973 movie Zanjeer, a big twist came into the lives of the couple when Amitabh planned a trip to London with his friends and he wished to bring Jaya along. His parents, who believed in traditional values and norms, insisted that they marry first. Realising the significance of his parent’s feelings, Big B wasted no time and proposed to Jaya, who agreed without delay.
On June 3, 1973, both the actor and the actress, surrounded by their close family and friends, tied the knot.
