It would have been a shame not to hear Jon Bon Jovi’s iconic track Livin’ On A Prayer if the legendary singer went with his original decision of never to record it. The rock song, created by the Bon Jovi band was a rage back in 1986. It hit the right chords among music enthusiasts becoming a chartbuster. The hard-hitting number from the Slippery When Wet album is still an earworm today. However, in a recent interview, Jon Bon Jovi — the band’s lead singer revealed how during the pre-production stages, he was “unimpressed" by the track and almost rejected the idea of producing it.
Jon Bon Jovi recently fronted the cover of People magazine and had an interaction with the publication. Spilling the beans on the Livin’ On A Prayer song, the 62-year-old shared, “It wasn’t that I didn’t want to record it, but I wasn’t all that impressed on the day that we wrote it. It was the simple chord progression, the melodies and the lyrics," where he found fault at first. Jon Bon Jovi changed his decision after he and the other band members worked on the track in the demo studio.
“But the bass line came to life in the demo studio, when we took it back to the band and worked it up. That’s how it became what it is. We knew what we wanted, we just didn’t have it, and so I was like, ‘Yeah, it’s good. Good day. Good day at the office,’ and I was wrong. It’s one of the biggest songs in our catalogue," added the Grammy winner.
Livin’ On A Prayer’s lyrics were penned by Jon Bon Jovi’s ex-bandmate and frontman Richie Sambora along with songwriter Desmond Child. The hit track paved the way for other popular songs including Wanted Dead or Alive and You Give Love a Bad Name.
Meanwhile, a new docu-series titled Thank You, Goodnight: The Bon Jovi Story was released on Hulu on April 26. The four-episode show centres around four decades of the Bon Jovi band. One of the episodes offered an anecdote on how Richie Sambora and Desmond Child pleaded with Jon Bon Jovi to record Livin’ On A Prayer.
