It's a big task to create or reboot a popular franchise and even after receiving negative response for the first film, go ahead and create a sequel. Not many can claim to do that except Michel Bay. After getting 'not so appropriate' responses for 2014 released 'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles', Bay went ahead and made a sequel , 'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of Shadows' and we are glad he did.
The sequel is high on action, faster installment of the series, when compared to the prequel. The turtles are better described, given lesser words to speak and in a way remind you of 'larger than life' method of Bay. It has aliens, portals, insecurities, car chases and of course Megan Fox.
Directed by Dave Green, the film starts off from where it left. Shredder escapes prison and meets Krang in another world. Both of them plan to take Earth down, however their plans are savaged by our beloved turtles. Leo, Ralph, Dino and Michael are the same and you enjoy every time they appear on screen. They make you laugh and feel the thrill at every moment possible. Megan Fox does what she does best, that is be herself. Stephen Amell as Casey Jones doesn't do much apart from being the 'new member'.
The film is a complete popcorn entertainer, as compared to its predecessor and only compared to it. However, when you take a step back and see the movie outside the shadow of 2014 film, it falls short of many things. The plot is stretched beyond repair. There's is no 'shock-moment' in the film, so even if you get a 10 minutes nap in between, nothing would be missed. No time has been spared to discuss the big villain of Ninja-world, Krang.
The film is inconsistent and appears half-baked. It is no doubt better made and entertaining than it's predecessor but there's a whole room for improvement. The action sequences keeps you invested and the insecurity of ' not being able to fit in' reminds you of 'X-Men'. The grandeur of CGI makes it look well in 3D. There's a very superficial charm to the film, with a hollow interior.
'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of Shadows' is definitely better than it's intolerable prequel but certainly not the best. It has everything a superhero movie needs but lacks innovation and a soul. You enjoy in parts if you were a fan of that dimension.
A onetime watch for all the green shell fans out there, a miss for the rest. Turtle power needs to be stronger, crispier and engaging if it plans to return for a third installment.
