Veteran actor Sharmila Tagore has reacted to the success of last year’s controversial Ranbir Kapoor film, Animal, and says we should understand why audiences liked it despite criticisms of violence and misogyny. Directed by Sandeep Reddy Vanga, Animal released on December 1, sparked debate, but earned Rs 900 crore globally, becoming a huge hit.
In an interview with Kapil Sibal on his YouTube channel Dil Se Kapil Sibal, Sharmila Tagore said, “There was a film called Animal”, to which Sibal interjected and said, “Terrible, terrible film, full of violence.” Sharmila then went on to say, “Beyond violence, there was misogyny. But there were a lot of women in the audience who said I want somebody to love me like that. Any film that runs a lot, you cannot rubbish it. You have to engage with it, try and understand it that what exactly is happening here.”
Animal was criticised by many, including Javed Akhtar, Swanand Kirkire, Kiran Rao and Adil Hussain. When Kapil Sibal said Laapataa Ladies broke Animal’s record, Sharmila Tagore corrected him, saying it was only on OTT, not in theatres. She added that a film with the right budget can succeed, like Laapataa Ladies. “It did well even theatrically as it was within the budget. Whereas Animal spent a lot of money and made a huge amount of money also and other films like that. There is that stark difference (in budgets) and it will continue. I don’t see it in the near future that it is going to change… So, the smaller films will also get their money back but not in the quantity that say a Ranbir Kapoor or a Ranveer Singh will bring,” she added.
Ranbir spoke about the success of the film and mentioned the criticism. “I want to thank all of you for being here today to celebrate Animal. It is a film that a section of people had an issue with but I feel the kind of love, success and the numbers (it has received) proves that nothing goes beyond the love for a movie. Nothing goes beyond movies,” Ranbir had said, as reported by PTI.
