Kate Winslet Opens Up on Facing 'Bullying' for Her Size, Says 'Lee' Crew Told Her to Hide 'Belly Rolls'
Kate Winslet reveals how media bullying after Titanic led to an eating disorder and her journey towards self-acceptance.

Kate Winslet is shedding light on her struggles with an eating disorder that developed in the wake of harsh media scrutiny following her rise to fame after Titanic. In a candid interview with Harper’s Bazaar UK, ahead of her upcoming film Lee, the Oscar-winning actress reflected on how tabloid criticism in her early career deeply affected her, pushing her to the brink.

“There was a lot of bullying of me that went on in the media, and that did get to me,” Winslet shared. “In my twenties, I was all sorts of different shapes and sizes, and the constant scrutiny was overwhelming.”

Despite the pressure, Winslet fought back. She recalls the uproar in 2003 when she publicly called out a men’s magazine for digitally slimming her down on its cover. At the time, women in the spotlight were expected to be quietly grateful for the attention, but Winslet refused to stay silent.

“I feel a huge sense of relief that women today are more accepting of themselves and rejecting judgment,” Winslet said. “I don’t know a single contemporary of mine who grew up seeing her mother looking in the mirror and saying: ‘I look nice!’ It was always about critiquing our bodies, and I’m done with that.”

For her role in Lee, Winslet made a deliberate choice to stop exercising so her body would appear authentically soft. She recalled a moment on set when a crew member suggested she sit up straighter to hide her belly rolls. “Not on your life! It was deliberate,” she said, emphasising that she takes pride in her natural appearance. “This is my life on my face, and that matters. It wouldn’t occur to me to cover that up.”

Winslet’s journey from battling an eating disorder to embracing her true self serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of self-acceptance, especially in an industry that often demands perfection. Through her candid reflections, she continues to inspire others to love themselves as they are.
