Kajol recently opened up about her role in Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (DDLJ), specifically addressing her character Simran’s decision to fast for Karwa Chauth. In a conversation with The Indian Express, the actor shared that she did not align with some of Simran’s choices, particularly the ritual of fasting.
“I didn’t agree with Simran in a lot of places,” Kajol admitted when discussing her role. The topic came up when her Do Patti co-star, Kriti Sanon, pointed out that Shah Rukh Khan’s character, Raj, also fasted for Simran in the film. Kajol humorously replied, “Haan toh? I don’t understand why people have to starve themselves. Bhookha kisko rehna hai?” (Yes, so what? I don’t understand why people have to starve themselves. Who likes to starve?).
In the iconic romantic scene from Aditya Chopra’s 1995 classic, Simran is shown keeping a Karwa Chauth fast for Raj. It is later revealed that Raj, too, had been fasting for her, a twist that added to the film’s romance but didn’t sit well with Kajol personally.
There's no karwa chauth scene as beautiful and full of innocence as this one. SRKajol's chemistry stays unbeaten ❤️????#29YearsOfDDLJ pic.twitter.com/NVxqAmjnDQ— sana (@sanaafsal) October 20, 2024
On the acting front, Kajol has been a Bollywood favorite, especially alongside Shah Rukh Khan, with whom she starred in several blockbusters like Baazigar (1993), Karan Arjun (1995), Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998), Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham… (2001), My Name is Khan (2010), and Dilwale (2015).
Her next film, Do Patti, features Kriti Sanon in dual roles, marking Kriti’s debut as a producer under her banner, Blue Butterfly Films, in collaboration with Kanika Dhillon’s Kathha Pictures. Directed by Shashanka Chaturvedi, the film also stars Shaheer Sheikh, Tanvi Azmi, Brijendra Kala, Vivek Mushran, and Prachee Shah Paandya in pivotal roles. The movie promises to bring an intriguing narrative, with Kajol and Kriti’s dynamic performances at its core.
Kajol continues to make headlines not just for her acting but for her outspoken views on cinema and life. Whether on-screen or off, she’s not afraid to challenge norms, much like the roles she plays.
