Dia Mirza has always been vocal about her experiences in the film industry, and her recent comments shed light on the intense pressure faced by actresses in the early 2000s. In an interview with Times of India, Dia recounted the daunting expectations imposed on female actors regarding their weight and age.
Reflecting on her early days in Bollywood, Dia revealed, “I was hurt. I was horrified. I was intimidated. I was filled with fears because that’s what was fed to us by the media, by the industry. Aurat ho, toh aapki shelf life hoti hai (You have a shelf life because you are a woman). Be in your 20s. You will not be cast with the stars. The male superstars need you to be a certain age. You have to look a certain way. You have to be a certain weight. Every single actress who came into the industry in the early 2000s was told that you have to be a certain weight. You have to look a certain way. You have to be single.”
Dia Mirza, who made her debut with Rehna Hai Tere Dil Mein, went on to build a successful career with notable films such as Dum, Tehzeeb, Parineeta, Lage Raho Munnabhai, and Sanju. Her recent work includes a role in Anubhav Sinha’s thriller series IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack. The series, now streaming on Netflix, dramatises the harrowing December 1999 hijacking of Indian Airlines IC-814.
In the series, Dia Mirza stars alongside a stellar cast including Vijay Varma, Naseeruddin Shah, and Pankaj Kapur, bringing to life the dramatic events surrounding the hijacking.
