It has been a very long journey for you, from being an actor to singer and now a composer...
It has been fabulous. And the best part of the journey is that it was just not monotonous for me. You have one life and you don't want your life to be boring. Manmeet and I know we have the talent and were willing to explore it, and that's what worked for us. While we worked on tracks like 'Baby Doll' and 'Chittiya Kalaiyan', we knew what the producer wanted. Since we were also aware of the viewers' interest, we could churn out good songs. It's a huge advantage for us when the director likes our songs. It gives us an instant high. When the same song fits in to a specific situation and also suits an actress, it becomes a hit!
Actor, singer, composer or a radio jockey; which role do you enjoy the most?
As a singer you get to connect with the audience, and a music director you compose each track, which is in itself a memorable experience. However, the production aspect of composing music is very tough. And the technical side of it is very time consuming.
At a time when digital music is finding several takers, do you think it is somewhere losing its live instrumental soul?
Difference between live and digital music is not much now. Certain rhythm sections like the base drum, evident from the samples that have been recorded, are so nice that they are just like the original piece. But yes, there are a few pieces such as guitar whose warmth can never be recorded on digital base unless it’s a romantic song. The feel of live music is almost 30% down from what it used to be back in early '90s. Digital music is big these days because of the huge variety that is available for music connoisseurs. Agreed, there is a demand for meaningful songs, which we love doing. But if we get a project that demands just the opposite, we can't change that either. It’s all about demand and supply. If there is a huge demand for a type of song, its supply will be huge. We are public servants. We can't serve Thai curry to people when they prefer Pani Puri.
Your music plays a key role in connecting with the Almighty…
I never mentioned this before, nor has anyone asked me this. But yes, I can say that in next 5 years world you will know me as someone who is very spiritual. Though I can't reveal about the project I’m working on currently, I can assure you that it will let people know the real me. I believe that everything that happens is purely because of God’s will. It happens as per His instructions. I am no one, but His employee. He is my instructor.
