The casting of Con artist Anna Delvey in the 33rd season of Dancing With The Stars has taken the world by surprise, primarily because of Delvey’s unique circumstances. Recently, in an interview with People magazine, Delvey revealed how she requested U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement to let her participate in the dance reality show. The 33-year-old will be contesting the popular reality with her ankle monitor amidst her house arrest.
For those of you who aren’t aware, Anna Sorokin, also known as Anna Delvey, was arrested in 2017 for posing as a wealthy heiress and defrauding socialites, hotels and banks out of $250,000. Delvey’s story gained global attention through the Netflix series Inventing Anna, which was a dramatic retelling of her life. After shortly being released in 2019 on the pretext of good behaviour, Anna was taken into custody again for violating the terms of her visa and has been living under house arrest since.
Talking about her participation in the celebrity dance show, she said, “Well, [DWTS] approached my team and I had to request ICE for permission to travel out of state because it’s being filmed in Los Angeles and I’m based in New York.” “By the time I got the approval, it was very close to the starting day so I kind of flew to LA pretty much the next day and I just decided why not?” she added.
Anna can be posing in a sparkly dress featuring her anklet monitor in a promotional image for the show signaling her controversial past. Earlier, in an interview with Hollywood Reporter, she said, “In what way would it affect my performance? It’s actually pretty light.”
Her inclusion in the popular dance reality show has raised controversy with critics questioning why a former criminal is being featured on television. Talking about the backlash, Anna said, “It’s just not that serious. If someone is that upset about casting on a dancing show, I don’t know what to tell them.”
