Amid the strong buzz surrounding Deadpool & Wolverine and Inside Out 2, Alien Romulus has become Disney’s third major hit of the year. The latest chapter in the Alien franchise opened strongly, as it earned $41.5 million domestically and collected $113 million worldwide. The film, directed by Fede Alvarez, saw impressive ticket sales during the opening weekend, including $18 million on Friday, $13 million on Saturday and $10 million on Sunday, as per Box Office Mojo. This strong performance pushed Alien Romulus ahead of Deadpool & Wolverine, which had held the top spot for three weeks. Now, Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman’s superhero movie has settled in second place with a $29 million opening weekend.
As per Disney, “This is the second biggest domestic opening in the current Alien series and the biggest opening of director Fede Alvarez’s career. This weekend saw The Walt Disney Studios hold both the No. 1 and No. 2 spots domestically with Alien Romulus and Deadpool & Wolverine. The Walt Disney Studios now account for an estimated 42% of the Domestic summer box office, having held the No. 1 spot for 8 of the 16 weekends. That includes the highest grossing animated film of all time, Inside Out 2 ($1.626 billion at the box office globally), and the highest grossing R-rated film of all time, Deadpool & Wolverine ($1.143 billion at the box office globally).”
According to ABC News, August is typically a slow month for movies, but 2024 exceeded everyone’s expectations. This year, films like Deadpool & Wolverine and It Ends With Us revived the box office. Speaking with the portal, Paul Dergarabedian, the senior media analyst for Comscore said, “The summer started off pretty gloomy, but it’s winding up really strong. We thought we were going to coast through August, but now we’re powering through August towards a much better overall summer number than we expected for the box office.”
Alien Romulus, set between Ridley Scott’s 1979 film and James Cameron’s 1986 hit, follows a group of young space explorers who encounter terrifying creatures while investigating an abandoned space station. Starring Cailee Spaeny, David Jonsson, Archie Renaux, Isabela Merced, Spike Fearn and Aileen Wu, the movie is scheduled to release in India on August 23.
