Gudi Padwa, which marks the start of the Marathi New Year, was celebrated with pomp all over the state of Maharashtra on April 9. Those who reside in Mumbai are well aware of the famous Girgaon Shobhayatra, a grand parade that takes place in the whole of Girgaon. The narrow streets of Girgaon are alive with activity as thousands of individuals adorned in traditional Marathi clothing fill the lanes. This procession, inclusive of both men and women, attracts not only Maharashtrians but also members of other communities. Participants carry vibrant orange flags, known as Kesari Dhwajh and sport elaborately decorated turbans called Safa. Like every year, Marathi actress Kunjika Kalwint, who became popular with the TV show Shubh Vivah, was seen at the Girgaon Shobhayatra this time too.
Kunjika Kalwint’s photos from the celebration went viral. She looked stunning in Marathi traditional attire. She was also seen playing the iconic instrument cymbals, while taking part in the parade. For this year’s Gudi Padwa, Kunjika wore a special pink coloured Nauvari saree. Authentic Marathmole jewellery added to her beauty. She shared pictures of herself from the parade for her fans to see.

For the last 16 years, Kunjika Kalvint has been participating in the Girgaon parade.
Kunjika, a Girgaon native, shared in an interview, “Every year, my New Year starts in a traditional fashion with a procession in Girgaon. The Shobhayatra is not just a tradition; it’s our pride as Girgaon residents. It holds a special place in our hearts. Despite my busy schedule, I prioritize attending the procession, ensuring I manage my work responsibilities to make time for this cherished tradition.”
“Growing up in Girgaon, I’ve witnessed the procession right from my doorstep since childhood. It was during those early years that I developed a keen desire to participate as a cymbal player. For the past 16 years, I’ve been actively involved with the ‘Girgaon Dhwajapathka.’ With this year marking the 20th anniversary of our team, there’s a sense of excitement and pride among everyone involved,” she said.
